John Rothrock

John F Rothrock is Professor and Vice Chair of Neurology at George Washington University. He is board certified in neurology and subspecialty board certified in vascular neurology (stroke) and headache medicine. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator for over 50 multicentre clinical trials involving stroke or migraine, as well as for over 60 single centre/investigator-initiated clinical research studies. Dr Rothrock established and directed the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Stroke Research Center, the UCSD Headache Research Center and the University of Alabama/Birmingham Headache Research Center. He established centres for clinical research involving the neurosciences at the University of South Alabama and the University of Nevada (Reno). In 2015, he established a research center for headache at George Washington University (GWU). Along with conducting epidemiologic research intended to better characterise various aspects of cerebrovascular disease and migraine, Dr Rothrock and his colleagues have assisted in the development of such therapies as intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) for acute stroke, warfarin for stroke prevention in individuals with atrial fibrillation, clopidogrel for stroke prevention, self-injectable sumatriptan for acute migraine, and divalproex sodium, topiramate and onabotulinumtoxinA for migraine prophylaxis. From 2001 to 2013, Dr Rothrock served as Editor-in-Chief of Headache, the journal of the American Headache Society. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the American Academy of Neurology Headache and Facial Pain Section.
