It is a great pleasure to be invited to write the foreword of the 8.1 issue 2013 of the European Neurological Review. The present edition contains a large variety of neurological topics, covering health economics and cost illness aspects, therapeutical interventions in Huntington’s disease and epilepsy in children, stroke-related topics, auto-immune disorders of the brain, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. We want to express our sincere thanks to the authors for their excellent contributions. European Neurological Review has become the forum of reviewing the main topics in European Neurology.

This is as important as the fusion of the ‘European Federation of Neurological Societies’ (EFNS) and the ‘European Neurological Society’ (ENS) in one new society, called the ‘European Academy of Neurology’. This new society will start at the end of the joint neurological congress EFNS-ENS in Istanbul in 2014. The first official congress of the European Academy of Neurology will take place in Berlin in 2015. Joining all neurologists in one society will raise the scientific level of European neurological congresses, making them some of the most important yearly scientific events in the world. Not only are our congresses becoming more important but also the impact of our European neurological journals is increasing. European neurologists should be proud to have published in a European journal. European Neurological Review has developed into an important reference journal.

European Neurological Review would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants on this edition, from organisations to individuals. A special thanks goes to our Editorial Board for their continuing support and invaluable guidance and the biggest thanks is reserved for the expert authors, who spared precious time and effort to produce a perceptive selection of articles.

This expert discussion and the wide variety of topics covered ensure there is much of interest for every reader and we hope you find this edition as useful and insightful as those before it
