Dr. Mark Freedman, MD, MSc

University of Ottawa, Ottawa, ON, Canada

Dr. Mark Freedman graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s Degree in Molecular Neurochemistry. He continued his postgraduate work specialising in neurology and neuroimmunology. He holds his specialist certification in Quebec CSPQ and all of Canada FRCP(C) and is a Fellow of both the American Neurological Association (FANA) and the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN).

He is currently Professor of Medicine in the field of neurology at the University of Ottawa, as well as Director of the MS Research Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus and a senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

Dr. Freedman has 35+ years of experience in managing patients with MS and has been the principal investigator on 100+ clinical trials with new therapeutic agents for MS. He has also served as the past President of the Canadian Network of MS Clinics and is currently the President of the Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in MS (ACTRIMS).

Additionally, Dr. Freedman has published ~400 papers and over 550 abstracts along with numerous books and book chapters and has been invited to give hundreds of presentations nationally and internationally. His extensive research includes the area of molecular neurochemistry, cellular immunology, neuroimmunology, cell-based therapeutics, biomarkers and clinical studies in MS. Currently, he is focused on cell-based therapies as well as biomarkers for MS.

Dr. Barry Singer, MD

Missouri Baptist Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Dr. Barry Singer earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his neurology residency at New York Hospital-Cornell University and a neuroimmunology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. He has been an investigator in more than 40 multiple sclerosis clinical trials focused on new therapeutic options, including remyelination.

He is the Director and Founder of The MS Center for Innovations in Care at Missouri Baptist Medical Center and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Singer has served on the Board of Directors of the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America since February 2016 and has a position on its executive committee. He also served on the health advisory committee of the Gateway Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society from 2000 to 2017 and received the 2008 Pathlighter Award.

In addition, Dr. Singer received a Congressional Proclamation for MS Research in 2008. His award-winning MS patient education website, www.mslivingwell.org, started in 2007, has been a valuable resource in 200 countries. Dr Singer is also the host of the MS Living Well podcast.

Dr. Jennifer Graves, MD, PhD, MAS

Dr. Jennifer Graves is a Professor of Neuroscience and Director of the Neuroimmunology Research Program at UCSD. She completed an MD and PhD in Biophysics at UT Southwestern. She trained in neurology at UPenn, receiving the Arthur K. Asbury Award for Clinical Excellence. She completed two fellowships in Neuro-ophthalmology at UPenn and in MS and Clinical Research Methods at UCSF. She has received grant support from the NIH, NMSS, the Race to Erase MS and the Foundation for the CMSC. Her current research focuses on the role of biological age on MS phenotype and has demonstrated that leukocyte telomere length is associated with disability accumulation in people living with MS and that a biomarker of ovarian aging is associated with MS disability in women. She develops next-generation digital tools to assess neurological patients, leveraging sensors developed in the computer control industry as well as novel applications in mobile technology.

Dr. Graves’ other work includes the study of genetic, environmental and sex-related factors on disease course and the application of visual outcome measures in neuroimmunological diseases. She is a collaborator in several national and international research efforts in MS and participates in multicenter clinical trials. She serves on the board of IMSVisual and the editorial boards of multiple journals, including Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Frontiers in Neurology, MS Journal and Neurology.

Prof. Maria Pia Sormani, PhD

University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy

Maria Pia Sormani is Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Genoa, Italy. She received her Master’s in Biostatistics at the University of Milan, her Master’s in Biophysics at the University of Pisa and her degrees in Physics at the University of Genoa, in Italy. Professor Sormani collaborated for more than 10 years with the Neuroimaging Research Unit at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, studying the methodological issues related to the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in multiple sclerosis. She worked for about 12 years at the National Institute for Cancer Research in Genoa in cancer clinical studies. She is now Professor of Biostatistics at the Medical School at the University of Genoa, where she teaches biostatistics and research methods to students in medicine.

Prof. Sormani’s main research interest is methods for clinical trials in multiple sclerosis, with a special focus on MRI outcomes. She serves on the National MS Society Clinical Trials Advisory Committee. She is Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of London. She is on the editorial board of Multiple Sclerosis Journal and Neurology. She has published more than 450 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has an h-index of 81.
