The composition of the gut microbiome is a modifiable factor associated with the risk of ischaemic stroke and post-stroke neurological outcome. Dr Miquel Lledós (Stroke Pharmacogenomics and Genetics Laboratory, Sant Pau Research Institute, Barcelona, Spain) discusses the outcome of a study using faecal samples to demonstrate the influence of the gut microbiome on ischaemic stroke risk and outcome.

The abstract entitled ‘New study links gut microbiota strains with more severe strokes and poorer post-stroke recovery‘ was presented at the 8th European Stroke Organisation Conference, May 4-6, 2022.

Questions:

  1. What was previously known about the impact of the gut microbiome on stroke risk and outcomes? (0:24)
  2. What were the aims and design of your study? (1:40)
  3. What were the study findings? (2:55)
  4. How may this knowledge be used to prevent strokes and improve neurological recovery? (3:28)
  5. What will be the next steps in your research? (4:19)

Disclosures: Miquel Lledós has nothing to disclose in relation to this video interview.

Support: Interview and filming supported by Touch Medical Media. Interview conducted by Danielle Crosby.
