Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder of upper and lower motor neurons that results in progressive motor impairment. ALS is the most common disease of motor neurons with an annual incidence of approximately 1.7–2.5 per 100,000 people. It is a terminal condition with a typical life expectancy of 2–5 years from symptom onset. […]

EUROPEAN NEUROLOGICAL REVIEW – VOLUME 11 ISSUE 1 – SUMMER 2016

We are pleased to welcome you to the summer edition of European Neurological Review. Editorial Board member Anna Sauerbier begins the edition with a special report on the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), of which she is a member of the liaison committee and an active member of the Residents and Research Fellow Section. The EAN has seen rapid growth since its inauguration and we are looking forward to the second meeting later this month; where free copies will be available to collect from the literature stand.

This edition features a review by Jacques de Reuck on the value of 7.0-telsa magnetic resonance imaging as an additional tool in post mortem brain examination, as well as a number of topical editorials, succinctly examining a range of important topics including epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and stroke. We also include the proceedings of a number of satellite symposia from the last year.

We hope you find this issue useful and that it provides helpful information and discussions that are relevant to your practice and interests. Please peruse and enjoy the expert content and we welcome any feedback you may have.

Welcome to the latest edition of European Neurological Review. This issue features several satellite symposia reports. The three pillars of success for long-term rehabilitation programmes in spastic paresis are outlined by Ward et al: setting patient-centred goals, detailed clinical assessment and guided self-rehabilitation programmes. Kelly et al discuss the benefit–risk profile of non-vitamin K antagonist […]

Children with epilepsy rarely suffer the condition in isolation. Cognitive, behavioural and psychiatric issues, which manifest as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), depression, unstable mood, and suicidality, are reported in 11–40% of those affected.1–4These diverse comorbidities, which complicate the care and outcome of children, are often as much […]

About 20% of all brain infarcts are caused by atherothrombotic macroangiopathy.1,2 The prevalence of atherosclerotic carotid disease increases with age. Epidemiological data show a prevalence of 3.1% for men and 0.9% for women in individuals with ≥70% North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET) criteria carotid stenosis who were 80 years or older. For ≥50% […]

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating, progressive and costly neurodegenerative disease that affects over one million people annually in the US.1 The four cardinal features of PD are well recognised, namely: tremor at rest, rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. Additionally, individuals with PD commonly develop non-motor symptoms such as autonomic dysfunction (orthostatic hypotension, and bowel […]

Although post-mortem neuropathological examination is increasingly performed less often in most western countries, it is still needed in patients with dementia, due to neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular changes, It is important for the family to be sure about the clinical diagnosis and to exclude the risk of a hereditary disease. Clinicalneuropathological correlation studies actually show only […]

In atrial fibrillation (AF), considerable harm can result from the lack of appropriate preventive therapy, and optimal prevention is critical, especially in vulnerable elderly or frail patients. AF markedly increases the risk of stroke and this condition must be monitored and potentially treated wherever it is detected.1–4 AF is an increasing concern for physicians worldwide […]

Spastic paresis is a frequent complication of lesions to central motor pathways including the upper motor neuron, and is deeply distressing for patients, not only because of the physical effects on their bodies but also due to the emotional impact of the lack of control of limb movements that may deprive them of their independence.1 […]

Over the past two decades, advances in the availability of new treatments and understanding of the disease have significantly improved the prognosis for many people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Despite this, in Europe, various aspects of management, diagnosis and monitoring of MS, the availability of guidelines, the development of new treatments and the provision of […]

Multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) is a rare, immune-mediated neuromuscular condition characterized by impairment of the peripheral motor nerves, leading to muscle weakness, affecting the arms more than the legs. The disease was formerly known as MMN with conduction block (MMNCB), since a predominant feature is CB at multiple sites along the motor nerves, although at […]

Population based studies show that primary headaches, such as migraine, are very common disorders.1 Similar accounts to vertigo and dizziness, which are are also symptoms frequently complained of.2 A significant proportion of patients report suffering these symptoms (headache, dizziness and/or vertigo) simultaneously and independently of each other. This especially accounts for migraine since up to […]

Of the 400,000 adults living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the US, an estimated 30% are between the age of 55–64 years and nearly 15% are 65 years of age or older.1 There is additional evidence of a shift in the peak prevalence of MS among older age groups. For example, the peak prevalence of […]
